Geology, Minerals & Soils Goals and Objectives

            Short Creek Aggregate Rock

Benefit the tribal community with the responsible development of the Tribes’ mineral resources. Protect the quality of the reservation’s water and air quality by stabilizing soils to prevent excessive erosion. Protect the community from landslide and earthquake hazards.

Geology, Mineral & Soil Resource Objectives

  • Areas of the reservation with significant landslide potential should be avoided as sites for roads or structures.

  • Soil tests and seismic investigations should be conducted for any significant development projects in the valley to determine whether there is a potential for liquefaction.

  • Logging and other unpaved roads such as the Mill Creek access road west of the solid waste disposal site should be maintained to minimize erosion.

  • Grazing plans should be implemented and maintained to prevent overgrazing and to reduce erosion from overland runoff.

  • The proposed rock quarries above Short Creek should be developed as an aggregate base mining enterprise.

  • A cultural resource assessment should be conducted at the proposed rock quarry sites.

  • Environmental safeguards should be in place to prevent any impacts to Short Creek.

  • Any proposed aggregate mining should be assessed to ensure environmental safeguards and consistency with the Tribes’ stream restoration programs.
